Projects: NAABT Stigmatizing Language Literature

The stigma of discovery and rejection by family, co-workers and friends has been a roadblock for those with addiction disorders. Thus, many who suffer addiction are hesitant to discuss their problems with others who might offer viable solutions and much-needed moral support. This educational sell sheet is part of the NAABT resource kit and backs up their mission statement to help reduce stigma and stereotype through education.

Why does language matter? This piece of literature answers this very question and is an important piece for NAABT in their effort to change the stigma surrounding Opioid dependence. "The Words We Use Matter" sell sheet explains what words to use and what words to avoid when speaking of addiction disorders that will help break down the stigma and stereotype between those with addictions and those without. If discussed openly, honestly and without stigma among patients and their significant others, relatives and contacts, the seemingly insurmountable problems of addiction can often be reduced to more manageable terms and parameters, no longer feeding into shame and embarrassment.
